How big ARE toilet windows these days?

So.

Have any of you ever actually met anyone* that you only know through the magical (and slightly nerdy) world of blogging? I know there's the odd blogmeet every so often, but what about just sort of making friends with someone and then actually meeting them?

I'm sure it'll be fine. They seem** normal enough.

* LC, your Slurker doesn't count unless you own up regarding their identity. Until you do, I shall continue to assume that they are a figment of your fevered, single-man imagination.

** Everyone does though, don't they? Especially on the internet. I mean, one minute you're arranging to meet that person you've been emailing for the last couple of months (they're really funny and you're sure you'll get on), and the next thing you know you're spending your days looking at the inside of the cupboard-under-someone's-stairs and shouting through a polish-soaked duster every time the postman knocks***.

*** I may need to get over this fear. Probably before Thursday.

Fortunately you've met me and put up with my peculiarities (the strange smell of turps, the fascination with all things knitted etc). Otherwise it'd make living together difficult !!!

Oh, you're talking about strange people you meet via blogging...sorry...

Oh, I did it.

I met Patroclus and lc and they were both very lovely. And perfectly normal.

(I was quite pissed though...)

Not yet. Too scared. I think, as Spinsterella suggests, a large amount of drunkenness probably helps...

Yes, I have.

I'm sure there is the occasional nutter - and thinking about it, one of the best bits is discovering that a person who you thought was quite normal is actually a nutter. But generally I've found people are reasonably the same in real life.

I try not to make too many virtual friends though. It just seems like such a casual betrayal of my REAL friends, who I never bother to email, telephone, meet up with, etc.

I did. But it turned out I was the nutter..

and then we didn't

is it 'cause you decided i was a nutter?

**bottom lip starts to quiver in pathetic fashion**

p.s. i met whinger and she was LOVELY, as was her partner - implausibly lovely, they were

p.p.s. i demand to know: which blogger are you on the brink of meeting? (i am assuming it's not kellycat for a post-work drink)

I met GSE a couple of times - she was very nice. And I met Spinny at a gig - she was very wiggly (although not as drunk as she pretends).

Also, I've been hiding in a bush in Surly's garden for the past two weeks, so we've *sort of* met, she just doesn't know it...

I met Tom (Random Acts of Reality) as I wanted to make a documentary about him and blogging last year. He was a fine individual. And I've met a few others recently which was good fun and rather drunken.

Strangely I hadn't seen Bob Swipe since I was a sixth form student - he commented on my blog a year or so ago and I had no idea who it was which freaked me out a bit as they seemed very familiar with me! I then had to work it out by an eliminative process of who and what was on his blogroll. We met last year for a fine drink up and have stayed in touch. Who are you meeting?

I sort of almost met the Beep but I didn't realise it was him until he mentioned it in his blog next day.
But he looked nice.

Why a polish soaked duster?

I've met a ton of people, all of them lovely. Step forward Pashmina, Belladona, James H (although strictly speaking we all met on a chat forum first), GSE, Wyndham, Spinny, DavetheF, Dr Snackspot (ditto re chat forum), Tim Footman, Annie Slaminsky and Occasional Poster of Comments. Bloggers usually turn out to be quite different in real life, but just as lovely and normal. I haven't met any nutters - apart from endearing ones. It's all good.

Also - blimey! Rockmother knows the legendary Bob Swipe! And Mig almost met the Beep - how did this happen? Gosh, the things you learn...

I have, I've met someone - one of the first words she said to me was "Bitch" and we've been Best Mates since - seriously.

Nope, don't do blogmeets - unless I'm around people I know I suffer from social anxiety, which means I have to worry about panic attacks/uncomfortable silences/whether or not I'm liable to only be able to speak in monosyllabic grunts etc., before I can even begin to worry about whether the other person is likely to be a serial killer.

See, "there's always someone worse off than yourself".

Er, mind you, I'm sure it'll all go well on Thursday ... unless you're meeting Tom 909, heh heh.

I've done it a couple of times and I can't complain. I used to say that I'd never do it, but it's been great!

In one-on-one meetings, I met Nics in Belfast and I met Sid and Carlos
in here New York.

Also, I once went to a New York City Bloggers meetup and I met Polly, The Homosexual Suspect, and others.

In each case, it was waaaaay less scary and strange than I thought that it would be.

I was supposed to meet LC in London but it never happened. I was expecting him to be both as hilarious and bitter as he is on his blonk. So, is he?

the very thought turns my knees to water. is this what you are planning? you are BRAVE.
*contrarily feels left out. then remembers she is on another freaking continent for the love of crap*

my husband has done lots of face to face business with folks from his forums, though, and they're all great. and these are biker forums, so one assumes the homicidal nutcase quotient will be on the high side. but no.

I think toilet windows are as small as ever.
So, with Muriel Spark as a compass (always a good idea, I find) and 'The Girls of Slender Means' for your A-Z, just remember to take lots of butter with you. Apply generously.

I accidentally met another blogger at the weekend. I sort of knew beforehand but wasn't quite sure, but she's just confirmed in a comment.

Slightly scarey...

spinny - ooh! who was that then?

mig - you know. a polish-soaked duster. the one that kidnappers shove in your mouth when the postman knocks (what with it being the closest thing to hand in the cupboard under the stairs and all).

tom909 - who are you then?

betty - after the sixth gin i'm sure you'd be fine.

Rather scarily, I formed a company after meeting up with some bloggers only once. They weren't axe murderers or anything, which was reassuring. Still, I wasn't blogging in those days. Not that I am now either. Heh-ho.

Blogger tom909 chimed in with...

Surly, tom909 is a very outspoken version of me. In real life I go a lot steadier with what I say. Also in real life, although I try not to have any rules, I am pretty careful with what I do. I might even be boring, in fact I probably am, actually let's not beat around the bush, I am.
I bet some witty fucker is going to come on here and say 'you're pretty bloody boring in cyberspace too, mate!

Is that legendary in the Roy Orbison sense or the Peter Sutcliffe sense, Patroclus? And will you marry me? (Answer the second question first...)

Ihad a very pleasant pub meet-up with Patro and Grammar Puss when I visited London in May. It's funny how people are so much more restrained than in their blogs, isn't it? I know I am (mostly).
One's blog avatar is a much less inhibited creature.
